Welcome to CWAA! We have begun the new school year and want to extend a “warm welcome” to all our students and families, new and returning.

SECONDARY AWARDS CEREMONY FOR THE 2012-2013 SCHOOL YEAR – All Grades 8-11 students and parents are cordially invited to join us on Thursday, September 12 at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium for a celebration of student recognition! Awards will be assigned for Honor Roll, Principal’s List, Character Awards, Subject Achievement Awards, Athletic and Music Awards for the 2012-2013 school year. We look forward to seeing you there! Please take note that this event replaces the June 26 Year End Awards Ceremony which was cancelled due to the flood.

CURRICULUM EVENING – We would like to extend a warm invitation all parents and students to our Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 12, at 7 p.m. in the CWAA gymnasium. Come out and meet your child (ren)’s teachers and talk about what your son or daughter will be learning this year. Learn how you can best help your child(ren) achieve their goals for excellence. We are proud to present our holistic program for your children and look forward to getting to know each one of you better!

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT FUNDRAISER: SUPT BOOKS – This year our Athletic Department is raising funds to purchase new athletic equipment and sports uniforms. To help raise these funds Mrs. Dodds (our new Elementary PE Teacher) and Mr. Fowler (our Secondary PE Teacher and Athletic Director) have distributed one SUTP book to each student to take home and sell. The cost of the books are $20.00 and $10 from every sale may be kept by the Athletic Department! Thank you for supporting this worthwhile fundraiser! Happy selling! RANCHO VIGNOLA NUTS and DRIED FRUIT: We are once again providing a service to our school and church communities by giving the opportunity of ordering these items. All proceeds will go toward the Grade 12 Educational Tour that will take place during Spring Break. Order forms will be attached to the newsletter. Orders must be in by Monday, September 23.

AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE PROGRAM – CWAA is pleased to announce that Katie Crews (CWAA librarian and Educational Assistant) has been hired to provide After School Care for a limited number of children. If you would like to sign-up for this after school service, please contact Katie Crews ( The hours of the After School Child Care Program are from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. and the cost is $5.00 per session.

ATTENDANCE – If your child is absent or tardy from school due to sickness, medical appointments, or any other reason, please call the school office.

NUT ALLERGIES – CWAA strives to be a nut free environment due to serious allergies of some students and staff. Parents, please be vigilant to prevent any nuts from coming to school in your children’s lunches. If your child has an allergy, please also remind them to not to share lunch items. Thank you!

POLICE CHECKS – Anyone wishing to volunteer at CWAA must have a police check filed in the office before entering a classroom or accompanying students on a field trip. A huge “thank you” to all of our volunteers … you are an essential part of our school. If you need a police check letter please contact the office.

SHOES FOR ALL GOD’S CHILDREN – It’s time to start bringing in your shoe donations for our Shoes for All God’s Children project in Kenya. We are pleased that our large shoe bin in the lobby has nearly filled up! Let’s see if we can fill a second! CWAA students are invited to bring new or nearly new shoes for children between the ages of newborn to 18 years, for distribution to needy school-aged children in Kenya. All shoes will be shipped to Kenya in November 2013. We are excited to help children in Kenya walk to school this year in a comfortable, clean pair of shoes! Thanks CWAA!

EXTRACURRICULAR SPORTS & MUSIC INFORMATION NIGHT – All parents of students who are involved in either Concert Choir or Band and/or Extracurricular Sports are invited by Mrs. Miranda and Mr. Fowler to attend an information session on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gymnasium. At this meeting Mr. Fowler will be sharing information about the sports program at CWAA, the philosophy of the athletic department, the schedule of events, uniforms, practice/game schedules, cost of each sport and parent volunteering opportunities. Mrs. Miranda will be sharing information about the music schedule of events in Concert Choir and Concert Band, the 2014 Choir/Band Tour to Southern California in May, including itinerary, budget and fundraising opportunities for families to reduce trip costs. Come get connected to your child’s Extracurricular Sports and Music Department participation at CWAA!

PRAYING PARENTS will be meeting again! Starting this Thursday, September 12, parents can meet for prayer in the lobby at 8:40 a.m. This is open to all parents, grandparents; guardians of any of our school children that have the belief that prayer can make a difference. TERRY FOX RUN – All parents, students and interested community members are invited to join CWAA in participating in The Terry Fox National School Run Day at CWAA on Friday, September 27 from 11:00 – 1:20 p.m. Be part of one of the biggest displays of solidarity against cancer on the planet…while setting an example of compassion, fostering school spirit, encouraging physical activity, and having fun! FOOD BANK FRIDAY (LAST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH) This last Friday of every month is a casual dress day for all elementary and secondary students (Kindergarten to Grade 12) and teachers at Chinook Winds. We ask that each student and staff bring a canned or packaged food item to be donated to the Calgary Food Bank.

THANK YOU TO OUR VOLUNTEERS! On behalf of the staff and Board, we would like to say a BIG thank you to all parents who came out to our Cleaning Bee on Sunday, August 25. Between 40-50 volunteers came to donate their time to help prepare our school for the new school year! It was an exciting event! We would also like to say thank you to Barb Schafer & the team of parents who hosted our Back to School Watermelon & Cookie feast! It was a fabulous way to kick off our year! Finally, thank you to all parents who offer their time on a regular basis to help make our school operate efficiently. You make a huge difference in our classrooms, hallways, gyms, field trips and community-at-large! We look forward to a GREAT year of partnering with you!

FACILITY UPGRADES OVER THE SUMMER! We are happy to announce that over our summer months many spaces in our school facility underwent a transformation! If you are an elementary parent, you may have noticed that all the classrooms were moved! Our Elementary classrooms arenow ordered from Kindergarten to Grade 3 in the elementary hallway and our Grade 4 and 6 classes are in our portable. Because we split the Grade 5/6 class into two full-grade classrooms, our Grade 5 class was moved to a classroom directly off our main lobby. Other great changes that you may notice if you take a tour of our facility include: new flooring in two classrooms (old computer lab and kitchen), new paint in all elementary classrooms and portable hallways, science lab, kitchen and gym office. Finally, we were blessed to have the creative talents of two of our Grade 11 girls (Stephanie Hiltz and Jessica Vanderband) create art on our secondary bathroom stalls. Thanks everyone for working together to make our school a place that we can be proud of!

UPDATE ON BASEMENT: During our preparation for this school year it was discovered that there was mold in limited areas in our basement classrooms. We immediately closed the basement and sought professional help to assess the mold and air quality in the basement and throughout the school. After the results of the assessments were completed, the school was given clearance by Calgary Public Health to resume regular operations in all areas of the school except the basement. The CWAA Board and Administration are working quickly and thoroughly with some of the leading mold remediation experts in our city to resolve the problem. We hope to finalize the scope of work and engage contractors in the next week. Thank you for joining us in prayer as we seek the best solution to this serious issue.

UPDATE ON PARKING LOT: Our parking lot is undergoing an upgrade and redesign (installation of a retaining wall, steps from the upper to lower parking lot and asphalt repair). We anticipate that work will begin within the next week. Thank you for staying within the designated parking and driving areas.

Chaplain’s Message

New beginnings are a blessing! New beginnings are a time to start over, to seek to be the person that God has planned for us to be. A new school year is a new beginning for many! But the beginning of a school year is not the only new beginning that we experience. By God’s grace, each day is a new beginning in our journey with Him. “The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22–23 ESV). May you experience God’s mercies today and this school year.
