Garden of Eden Education at CWAA
What does 21st Century, Garden of Eden, Adventist Education look like? If we were to be transported back to the Garden of Eden, with our 21st century advancements, what would our school actually look like? What would be different? It seems like a silly question to ask, yet I believe it’s an important question because our “success depends on fidelity in carrying out the Creator’s plan.” (Ellen White, Education, p 50)
If God were the Superintendent or Board Chairman or Principal or Teacher or Parent, what would our school practically look like? What courses would we offer? How much time would we spend learning indoors or outdoors? What would our teaching and grading practices look like? What technologies would we use? How much time would we spend reading textbooks, writing tests, completing group projects, sitting behind a desk? What role would nature play in our learning?
This past week I spent time with Adventist educators from across Canada in the province of Ontario, refreshing our passion and commitment to Adventist education. As we met, my mind would often drift to the difference between ‘what is’ and ‘what was meant to be’. I found myself reflecting on many questions:
- Are we striving to achieve the highest learning goals God set in motion back in the Garden of Eden?
- How much do we infuse God’s 2nd lesson book (nature) into our daily lessons?
- Do we spend as much time nurturing the spiritual, social, physical, and practical skills – as the intellectual?
- Are we truly equipping our children with a meaningful practical education, where they possess a skill or trade when they graduate?
- Do our students possess a sense of pride and accomplishment in what they have learned (and not just the grade they receive).
- How literate are our students in Bible memory, or in giving a Bible study? Are our students truly literate Bible students and believers in Adventist Bible-values?
- Are we giving our students enough opportunities to serve unselfishly?
- Do we bring God with us in all we do at school, including conversations in our hallways, playgrounds, and even parking lot visits?
- Are we preparing passionate missionaries to join in the collective efforts of the Adventist church to spread the last-day message of hope to our dying world?
- Do our students understand the unique purpose of Adventist education?
In my humble opinion, I believe that God has a sharper Garden of Eden vision for our school than what we are living and it is our privilege to evaluate how our education can be more closely patterned after God’s Garden of Eden school for our children. I believe He has assembled an excellent team of servant vessels at CWAA (our pastors, teachers, and support staff) that are fully committed to His service and we have an equally excellent body of parents who have chosen to be obedient to His call to send their children to our Adventist school. We have all the makings of a great 21st century Garden of Eden Adventist School!
As the Principal at CWAA I would like to invite you to come and pray about this important theme for the month of March in our Thursday morning Praying Parents prayer group, starting at 8:40 am. Let’s ask God to bring a laser sharp focus to our school – to be more courageous and purposeful in aligning our education with God’s ideal education. Let’s ask God to give us – as a collective group of trusted adults – strength to seek His favor above the favor of the world and give us a renewed vision for how we can provide His children, with His education, in His Garden of Eden at CWAA! May God give us all strength and peace this week as we work in His garden!

CHRISTIAN BOOK FAIR COMING TO CWAA: For a number of years our school has run a Book Fair to inspire our students to read. We have utilized the Scholastics Book Club for our fair, as their resources are current, accessible and our students love the variety of books and toys! However, our staff and parents have routinely expressed concern that the content is non-Christian and have wondered if it would be possible to run a Christian book fair. When ABC Manager, David Toews, approached me last year and suggested that the ABC could come to CWAA to run a book fair, I was overjoyed and jumped at the offer! So we booked a 2-day Book Club Fair at the same time as our Constituency Meeting last March and we enjoyed an exciting time of increased focus in reading high quality, current, beautifully-displayed Christian resources. At the end of the Book Fair, the ABC generously donated proceeds from their sales to our library program. We are excited to have the ABC return to our school on March 20 – 23 to provide our students with Christ-centered literacy resources! Come on out & share in the excitement!
