THANK YOU TO OUR FAMILIES WHO CAME OUT TO OUR AWARDS CEREMONY AND CURRICULUM EVENING! We had an exciting evening on Thursday, September 12, as we celebrated our scholars, athletes, musicians and student leaders in our secondary school. (Thank you to Venita Elkow for creating and printing all 127 Student Awards!) We were pleased to have an excellent turnout. Students, teachers and parents mingled and fellowshipped in our gym. We praise
God that our community is thriving and growing. It is always a pleasure to get together and celebrate learning!

ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT FUNDRAISER: SUPT BOOKS – This year our Athletic Department is raising funds to purchase Indoor Soccer Goals and Elementary Adjustable Basketball Backboard and Rims. To help raise these funds SUTP books went home with students at the beginning of the school year. The cost of the books are $20.00 and $10 from every sale may be kept by the Athletic Department! Thank you for supporting this worthwhile fundraiser! Happy selling! (Please return any unsold books to the office by Friday, September 20. Thank you.)

RANCHO VIGNOLA NUTS and DRIED FRUIT: We are once again providing a service to our school and church communities by giving the opportunity of ordering these items. All proceeds will go toward the Grade 12 Educational Tour that will take place during Spring Break. Order forms will be attached to the newsletter. Orders must be in by Monday, September 23.

AFTER SCHOOL CHILD CARE PROGRAM – CWAA is pleased to announce that Katie Crews (CWAA librarian and Educational Assistant) has been hired to provide After School Care for a limited number of children. If you would like to sign-up for this after school service, please contact Katie Crews (kcrews@nullcwaa.net). The hours of the After School Child Care Program are from 3:45 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. and the cost is $5.00 per session.

MORNING ROUTINE & LATE STUDENTS – This is a reminder to all parents and students that students who are dropped off between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. should go directly to the supervised Homework Room (Elementary Students) or Secondary Hallway (Junior and Senior High Students).

Teachers hold class devotions (worship and prayer) from 8:30 – 8:40 a.m. Students arriving after 8:30 a.m. are considered late and must check-in at the office and receive a late slip prior to entering their classroom. Each late is recorded in our student information system. Please note: Students should not be dropped off prior to 8:00 a.m. or picked up later than 3:45 p.m. unless involved in sports/music practices OR registered in the Before/After School Care Program.

STUDENT ABSENCES – If your child will be absent, please ensure you call or email the office (not classroom teacher) prior to 8:30 a.m. This will allow our office staff to communicate to all your child’s teachers. All students must sign-in and sign-out if they are arriving after 8:30 a.m. or leaving before 3:15 p.m.

QUIET ZONES – To provide the best learning environment for our students, and to encourage independence and responsibility in our students we request all parents exit the elementary and secondary hallways by 8:30 a.m. (unless you are volunteering in a classroom) and wait in the main lobby until the 3:15 p.m. bell has rung.

NUT ALLERGIES – CWAA strives to be a nut free environment due to serious allergies of some students and staff. Parents, please be vigilant to prevent any nuts from coming to school in your children’s lunches. If your child has an allergy, please also remind them to not to share lunch items. Thank you!

POLICE CHECKS – Anyone wishing to volunteer at CWAA must have a police check filed in the office before entering a classroom or accompanying students on a field trip. A huge “thank you” to all of our volunteers … you are an essential part of our school. If you need a police check letter please contact the office.

SHOES FOR ALL GOD’S CHILDREN – We have exciting news to report! Our second shoe bin is nearly filled up! Let’s see if we can fill a third! All shoes will be shipped to Kenya in November 2013. We are excited to help children in Kenya walk to school this year in a comfortable, clean pair of shoes! Thanks CWAA!

 EXTRACURRICULAR SPORTS & MUSIC INFORMATION NIGHT – All parents of students who are involved in either Concert Choir or Band and/or Extracurricular Sports are invited by Mrs. Miranda and Mr. Fowler to attend an information session on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the Gymnasium. At this meeting Mr. Fowler will be sharing information about the sports program at CWAA, the philosophy of the athletic department, the schedule of events, uniforms, practice/game schedules, cost of each sport and parent volunteering opportunities. Mrs. Miranda will be sharing information about the music schedule of events in Concert Choir and Concert Band, the 2014 Choir/Band Tour to Southern California in May, including itinerary, budget and fundraising opportunities for families to reduce trip costs. Come get connected to your child’s Extracurricular Sports and Music Department participation at CWAA!

PRAYING PARENTS are meeting again! Thursday mornings, parents can meet for prayer in the lobby at 8:40 a.m. This is open to all parents, grandparents; guardians of any of our school children that have the belief that prayer can make a difference. TERRY FOX RUN – All parents, students and interested community members are invited to join CWAA in participating in The Terry Fox National School Run Day at CWAA on Friday, September 27 from 11:00 – 1:20 p.m. Be part of one of the biggest displays of solidarity against cancer on the planet…while setting an example of compassion, fostering school spirit, encouraging physical activity, and having fun! Our school goal this year will be to raise $3,000. If every teacher and student donates $15 to the Terry Fox Foundation we will more than meet our goal! Donations can be made online or with paper pledge sheets. As an incentive for classes to work together, the class that raises the most money (above their minimum quota) will WIN a pizza party! FOOD BANK FRIDAY (LAST FRIDAY OF EVERY MONTH)
The last Friday of every month is a casual dress day for all elementary and secondary students (Kindergarten to Grade 12) and teachers at Chinook Winds. We ask that each student and staff bring a canned or packaged food item to be donated to the Calgary Food Bank.

Chaplain’s Message
The spiritual theme for Chinook Winds this school year is Today Is The Day! Today is the day to remember that this day is possible because of God! Today is the day to allow God to be glorified through our thoughts, words and actions! Today is the day to happily enjoy life to the fullest! “This is the day that the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalms 118:24 ESV).
