Humble Yourself and He Will Lift You Up
Last Wednesday morning I received an urgent phone call from the Alberta Conference, reporting that we had a problem with our 2013-2014 budget proposal to the Government of Alberta. In our budget we had mistakenly used an incorrect funding rate that, once corrected, resulted in a significant deficit. Our budget deadline was the next day, May 30. The phone call immediately put me on my knees. As I grappled with the reality that we might have to make significant adjustments in our budget, I begged God for help. Just the thought of having to cut back on an already skeleton budget made me sink into despair.
Over the past months we had been working hard to cast a vision that would provide our students with a higher quality program – to partner with God in a new way to grow His school. It was heartbreaking to me that God would bring us a vision without the means to make it happen. After I got off my knees I picked up the phone and called my husband, Joel. As I poured out my heart to him he immediately reminded me of the verse he had shared earlier that morning – “Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” James 4:10. He said, “Lara, money can come from many different sources. This is a complex issue that will require a complex solution. But God will lead and the issue will be worked out. Humble yourself, Lara.” The next phone call I made was to Mwalundi. I wept as I told him the news and we arranged a time to meet later that evening. I then packed up my bag and personal belongings and left the school to go home to work with God alone on the budget. All afternoon I poured over the budget – cutting, rearranging, rethinking priorities. By the time Lundi and I connected on the phone after 9:30 p.m. that evening, I was convinced that we might need to cut back on the number of teachers. I shared my fears with Lundi. Lundi immediately said, “Lara, we are not going to cut back on our instructional staff or instructional supplies. This will directly decrease the quality of our program. Let’s see what we can do.”
Over the next three hours our Intelligent and Wise Accountant, God, worked alongside Mwalundi and I as we poured over our budget – adjusting and re-thinking the allocation of funds to every single account. And just before midnight, Praise God, we arrived at a balanced budget. To balance our budget we unfortunately had to make some unwanted cuts to our support staff (teaching assistants, library staff, office staff and marketing staff), but we did so trusting that God would bring our enrolment higher than our projected enrolment of 172.
God is faithful! And when we do humble ourselves before Him, He can do mighty deeds and do far more than what He could do if we stood proudly before Him with our human solutions. I am confident that God is blessing CWAA. He HAS provided for our needs in the past and He WILL provide for our future needs! I praise God that we can trust Him. He will provide for our needs to achieve our goals for the next school year. Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
We are delighted to report that our confirmed enrolment for the 2013-2014 school year, to date, has reached 170! Some of our classes are filling up! There are only 5 more spots in Kindergarten and 6 more spots in Grade 8 and 11. If you know of any families considering attending CWAA, please send them our way! Thank you for partnering with us in prayer and supporting our school!

Shoes for All God’s Children
Did you know that many Kenyan parents are unable to afford shoes for their children to attend school? It is not uncommon for children to walk miles without shoes and those who have shoes often have to choose which day to wear them, for fear of their shoes wearing out prematurely. As a result these children are exposed to parasitic diseases that could become potentially detrimental to their health and the health of their families. To help Kenyan children, CWAA is partnering with Garden Road SDA Church in an exciting new venture called “Shoes For All God’s Children”. CWAA students are invited to bring new (or nearly new) shoes for children between the ages of newborn to 18 years, for distribution to needy school-aged children in Kenya. Donated shoes can be brought to school and placed in a donation bin in the lobby. All shoes will be shipped to Kenya in November 2013. We are excited to help create lasting change in a child’s life by our partnership and invite all parents to be involved with their children! Please feel free to share this outreach opportunity with your friends and family.

At this time of the year, we celebrate the accomplishments of students. Here at Chinook Winds this month we have graduation ceremonies for Kindergarten, Grade 6, Grade 9, and Grade 12 students. We also have award ceremonies. It is great to be able to celebrate the achievements of our students. But there is an even better celebration in the future that we can look forward to – in heaven. At that celebration, we won’t be celebrating our accomplishments. We will be celebrating what Jesus accomplished on our behalf! Let me invite you to make the choice today and every day to follow Jesus and to let Him be the King of your life. That is definitely something to celebrate!
If you want to know more about what it means to follow Jesus, please talk to Pastor Brent at CWAA or a pastor at your church.
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” (Matthew 6:33 ESV).
