What if Jesus had a BFF and it wasn’t you?
Best Friends Forever. “BFF”. This title, especially for children, states impenetrable permanency, a relationship more valuable and meaningful than anything you could ever offer or receive in the interaction.
What if you were talking to your friend and they stopped talking to you and said, “Oh look, my BFF, I have to go talk to them.” What if your friend was Jesus. What if Jesus interrupted your prayer to talk to someone He had designated as more important? What if Jesus, the one we turn to for comfort, love, peace, kindness, and safety had a BFF? Would you think, “It’s ok, we are still friends. Even though I know there are others more valuable, more meaningful, more important, it’s ok. I’m happy to just be a lesser friend.” Or would you question your relationship? Would you wonder why despite having given of yourself, despite having been loyal and trusting, despite having supported and praised, why your relationship had been determined to be less valuable to Jesus?
Thankfully, Jesus doesn’t have a BFF. Thankfully, we are all God’s children, we all have unique and individual relationships with Him, and no single relationship invalidates or devalues another. Jesus wants us to love one another as He has loved us. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you.” John 15:12
As parents, teachers, role models, and Christians, we should not tolerate the promotion of the idea of BFFs. We should not allow our children to speak and interact with their peers in a hierarchical manner. How would we feel if Jesus’ love was hierarchical?
We all agree that bullying is harmful, that discrimination is wrong. We all agree that as a community we cannot tolerate emotional manipulations that tear people down on the basis of who they are as individuals. We all know we should be building each other up. “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29
The next time you hear your or any child use the term BFF, stop and think of the “friends” who are not the designated BFFs. Is this designation uplifting? By labelling individual relationships are we loving each other as Jesus has loved us? Are we building each other up or are we allowing our children to tear each other down? Every friendship, just like every relationship with Jesus, is unique. Some are stronger than others, some are more involved, some are more passive. None are less valuable. What if Jesus had a BFF and it wasn’t you?
“WHO DO YOU TELL” GRADES K-6 PARENT IN-SERVICE: On Wednesday, September 28 at 6:30 p.m. all K-6 parents are invited to a Parent In-Service provided by Calgary Communities Against Sexual Abuse regarding the implementation of the “Who Do You Tell” Program starting October 13. 2016 CWAA TERRY FOX RUN: The 2016 Terry Fox Run at CWAA will take place during the school day this Thursday, September 29 beginning at 1:45 pm. The money raised from this event will go to the Terry Fox Foundation and will help with cancer research. The goal is to raise $2500 as a school. There is no minimum amount that a student must raise in order to be a part of the run, but please try raising something! If every one of our students raised $15 we would exceed the fundraising goal for our school! Students can set up an online donation page and donors can donate online by going to: http://www.terryfox.ca/ChinookWindsAdventistAcademy.
Cash and cheque donations will also be accepted (make sure the cheque is made out to The Terry Fox Foundation). To access a Pledge sheet that can be printed, click here. Donations of $20 or more are eligible to receive a tax receipt if the proper donor information is provided to the Terry Fox Foundation. If you have questions please contact Pastor Brent Wilson firstname.lastname@example.org or at 403-286-5686. Have fun as you ‘Let HIS Light Shine!’ by raising money to help with cancer research. Thank you!

Thank you to those who have already raised money toward our Terry Fox Run! If your student has not yet done any fundraising for this great cause, please encourage them to ask some relatives or even accompany them to the homes of some neighbours. A great thing about raising money for the Terry Fox Foundation is that you don’t often have to do much explaining – many Canadians already know about Terry Fox! My 4 year old daughter has been doing some fundraising for our CWAA Terry Fox Run – and she isn’t even a student here at CWAA yet! She has raised $63 total from three neighbours and a family friend! Why not give it a try as you help our school reach the $2500 fundraising goal for this cause?
