Principal’s Message:

THE COST OF DISCIPLESHIP

“In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples.” Luke 14:33 “If anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even their own life—such a person cannot be my disciple.” Luke 14:26

My life is drastically different from the life of Jesus. How about you? I have a decent-sized home, comfortable furniture, a big-screen TV, several vehicles (one with motorized doors, air-conditioning, cruise control, seat warmers, etc.), I can fill my fridge several times a month or eat out whenever I want. Furthermore, I enjoy peaceful and loving relationships with my mom, dad, brother, sister, and my husband and children. These two commands of Jesus perplex me – and actually even disturb me. How can I give up everything, including to “hate” my family? What did Jesus really mean by these words? Does He actually require that I give up my belongings to live a life of poverty and that I abandon and reject my own children and family to follow Him? Hate is a strong word. I cannot hate my family.

It’s important to understand what Jesus meant by the word “hate”. The Greek word translated “hate” simply means “to love less”. So, Jesus’ command was to reinforce the meaning – to follow Him we must love Him more than family and friends, and even life itself. These words of Jesus have less to do with giving everything and everyone up, than the need to place Him first and to love Him more. If we want to be a disciple of Jesus we must be willing to put Him before our children, husband, parents, siblings, friends, work, or material possessions – to pledge complete allegiance to Jesus and be willing to give up our closest ties or our own lives if necessary. Would I be willing to abandon everyone and everything for Jesus if He required? Would I be able to choose Him over my family?

The only way I can do this is if I understand the great love that God has for me – in that He laid down His life for not just me, but for all whom I love. Jesus commands to give up everything and ‘hate’ family – is simply a re-stating of the greatest commandment – “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind and your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39) When I love God in the proper order, I truly will have life everlasting and I will enjoy love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23) I want to be a disciple like that. What about you?
