Principal’s Message

The Antidote for Disappointment

The experience of disappointment seems to be incredibly common. We are easily disappointed by the food we receive as we pass quickly through a drive-thru, or disappointed in a product we purchased, or disappointed that our efforts didn’t bring some greater reward. If you’re like me, the kinds of disappointments that really get me down, are those which happen when people I love let me down, or I discover something that taints my picture of a situation or an ideal. This past Sabbath I experienced a disappointment when I received a response from one of my family members that I did not want. I had hoped for a different response and was overwhelmed to the point of tears. Fortunately, I walked away from the situation without imposing a response back towards my family member that would have brought them disappointment! Instead, I walked away without reacting, gathered my hurt feelings and chose to turn my disappointment towards God. Instead of fixating on the disappointment (the way I often do!), I began to praise and thank God for all that He had done. I thanked Him for His forgiveness in my life, His kindness to my family and I, His generous love and provisions, my healthy children, my loving parents, my husband who protects me and provides for me, a meaningful place of employment where I can be free to follow God, freedom from bondage, freedom to make choices and express my opinion openly without persecution, the ability to use my hands, brain, legs, voice, for a home in heaven, chance after chance to receive redemption from my bad choices, the ability to breath clean air, the Holy Spirit as my friend, teacher & comforter, new hope and mercy each day, the Word of God, the armor of God which protects me, healing from pain and broken relationships.

Scripture tells us that we are to “be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:18). When we make it a habit of turning our disappointments into gratitude and directing praise towards God, there’s a sweet peace that displaces the disappointment. Philippians 4:6-7 says, Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Whatever your disappointment today, don’t forget that God has abundantly given you His attention, to receive your gratitude and provide your heart and mind with comfort and peace in the midst of your disappointment.
