Principal’s Message: Giving with all our Mites!

I have a dream for 2017! My dream is that CWAA would become known as the school in Calgary that really cares about our neighbors. I have a dream that we would be watching and listening for needs in our community and immediately taking action. Imagine the difference we could make if we heeded the counsel of John, “If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, then the love of God is not in that person. Children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” (1 John 3:17)

Last week in Chapel I challenged our students to think of ways they could be better neighbors. I shared with the students some of our immediate needs in Calgary (www.faceitcalgary.com/facts/) such as:

  1. On any given night, there are over 3,500 homeless people on our streets – including 300 children
  2. On any given night, 160 families sleep in Calgary shelters
  3. Each year between 15,000 and 17,000 different people use an emergency shelter in Calgary
  4. Each year there are over 200,000 families and individuals that receive Emergency Food Hampers (43% children) and there are over 3,000,000 meals provided by the Calgary Food Banks
  5. 16% of children living in Calgary go to bed hungry and do not have enough food at school
  6. 14,000 Calgary households are at risk of becoming homeless and having their lives changed forever

A few hours after the challenge was given Rachel Sikhosana, Grade 3 student, approached me and made a special request. Rachel said, “I want to try to raise money so we can try and find some places for homeless people so they can have a better life. So that’s why I’m asking if we can get a little box and the whole school can get a lot of money in it. Then I’ll ask the high school to try to find some homeless people and we can bring them to a homeless shelter like the Calgary Dream Center, Mustard Seed and some of the other ones.” When I asked Rachel why she wanted to do this she said, “I want to be a really good neighbour.”

Truly a little child will lead! I realize that the month of January can be a very challenging time to give money to any cause. Many of us are just managing our basic bills after overspending during the Christmas holidays. But imagine the joy it would give Jesus to know that we are being led by a little child – to give unselfishly to those who are truly in need. When I asked Rachel how much money she thought we could raise she said, “I think we can raise $4.52!” Rachel’s target amount made me think of Jesus beautiful words about the widow who gave her two mites, “That poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these other people gave a lot because they are rich. But even though she is poor, she put in everything. She had nothing left to live on.” (Luke 21:3-4) Let’s make Jesus proud in 2017 by giving with all our mite(s) and looking out for our neighbours!

ALBERTA EDUCATION ACCOUNTABILITY PILLAR SURVEY:  It’s that time of year where Alberta Education is seeking your input about the education we are delivering at CWAA! From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting its annual “Accountability Pillar Survey”. The Accountability Pillar Survey assesses various aspects of quality; student outcomes, provincial assessments of student learning, community engagement and satisfaction, school experience, etc. Within the next few weeks, all CWAA parents will receive a survey from Alberta Education in the mail. In February, CWAA students and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.  All surveys are anonymous. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish and Tagalog. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving at CWAA, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly. Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2017. Thank you for your participation in this important process!

CITRUS FRUIT: There will be no more citrus fundraising orders this school year. Thanks for your support of our November order!

Chaplain’s Message:

How much perseverance do you have? Are you willing to stick with a project or a trip or your faith no matter how difficult things get? The the Old Testament, Nehemiah sets out to provide leadership for the rebuilding of the walls of Jerusalem. It doesn’t take long before opposition hits. There are false rumours and threats. But Nehemiah has perseverance. And the walls are rebuilt – in only 52 days! Because of Nehemiah’s perseverance, God was able to work through him and the many others who helped to rebuild the walls! Are you willing to show perseverance as you follow God’s leading? Even when the enemy threatens you? Hang in there! As you hang on to God with perseverance, He is able to accomplish His will in your life!

“So on October 2 the wall was finished—just fifty-two days after we had begun. When our enemies and the surrounding nations heard about it, they were frightened and humiliated. They realized this work had been done with the help of our God.” (Nehemiah 6:15-16 NLT)
