CWAA Breeze Newsletter February 1-5, 2016

Principal’s Message:

One of the greatest joys of this year for me personally has been to teach Bible to our Grade 11 students. Since September we have studied the books of Romans and Daniel, we have engaged in dozens of discussions about SDA values & beliefs, and we have served in many capacities. Last month I invited my students to participate in a 60-day challenge to take on the mind of Christ so they could experience a transformation in their lives. In our discussions many students expressed a desire to experience more power and victory in their lives over their daily challenges. So I challenged my students to set aside daily time to ‘watch and listen to Jesus’. I too joined in the challenge. We are nearly half way through with March 7 being the end date! I have been praying daily that God will pour out His power on each student who is participating. I have seen God’s hand at work – not only in my life but in the lives of my students.

How do we take on the mind of Christ? According to Paul, we can actually have the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16) and it’s not even that difficult! In order to have the mind of Christ we must simply get to know Him by watching & listening to Him. As we watch & listen to Him our lives will come under His influence and the Holy Spirit will dwell in us, instruct us, and fill us with wisdom and we will take on the mind of Christ. The only way we can experience this is to commit to meeting with Jesus each and every day to study Him. (Think of it as a ‘coffee date’ with Jesus every day!) If we’re serious about taking on His mind, we must get to know Him in an intentional way.

I would like to invite you – our parents – to join the Grade 11 class in this challenge to “be transformed by the renewal of your mind” (Romans 12:2). Commit to spending daily time with Jesus directly and take on the mind of Jesus. On March 7 join my students and I in our celebration of God’s transforming power!

(Thursday), and wear ‘Stand Up To Bullying’ Bracelets. Parents, please join us in prayer as we use this event to continue building a culture of respect and compassion at CWAA! ALBERTA EDUCATION ACCOUNTABILITY PILLAR SURVEY: It’s that time of year when Alberta Education is seeking your input about the education we are delivering at CWAA! From January to the end of February, Alberta Education will be conducting its annual “Accountability Pillar Survey”. The Accountability Pillar Survey assesses various aspects of quality; student outcomes, provincial assessments of student learning, community engagement and satisfaction, school experience, etc. Within the next few weeks, all CWAA parents will receive a survey from Alberta Education in the mail. In February, CWAA students and all teachers will be completing their surveys online at school.  All surveys are anonymous. In addition to English and French, the parent survey is available in Chinese, Punjabi, Arabic, Blackfoot, Cree, Korean, Spanish and Tagalog. Your participation in the survey helps provide important information on the quality of education your child is receiving at CWAA, so we encourage you to return your survey promptly and directly to Alberta Education. Survey results will be available to school authorities in May 2016. Thank you for your participation in this important process!

Chaplain’s Message:

In the Chaplain’s Message last week I asked some personal reflection questions about what type of soil our lives are for the seed of God’s kingdom to grow in. If you missed that post, check it out here. Jesus told a parable about seed falling on different types of soil and the result. But what can we do to make sure the soil of our kids’ lives is good so that God’s kingdom can grow in them? The truth is that we can’t force our kids to have good soil. We can try to provide a quality Christian environment for them to mature in. We can try to prayerfully work with them to pull out some of the weeds that seem so obnoxious and obvious in their lives. We can help to provide the spiritual nutrients and water that will help the seeds to grow healthfully. But ultimately it is God’s Holy Spirit who does the real work in their lives.

Regarding the sharing of the gospel with the Christians in the city of Corinth, Paul said:

“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth.” (1 Corinthians 3:6-7 ESV).

May we do our part to plant and water the seeds of God’s kingdom in our kids. But may we also lift our kids up in prayer, asking for the power of the Holy Spirit to work the miracle of spiritual growth in their lives!
