This weekend our family gathered in Kelowna, BC for my husband’s mothers’ 80th birthday celebration. Prior to us going out to Kelowna my mother-in-law made a specific request. She requested we bring no gifts, but rather each family member prepare to share a personal story, song, poem or meaningful Bible verse with her after our lunch on Sabbath. And so after we finished eating we gathered in the living room to share. My husband, Joel, shared a memory of a sacred conversation he had with his dear mother when he was only 7 years old. The story goes like this. One afternoon his mother was vacuuming the floor while Joel was playing when all of a sudden Joel’s mother noticed that he was crying. She quickly stopped her vacuuming and came to his side, asking him why he was crying. Joel poured out his heart to his mother about his sadness and confusion over why Jesus had to die on a cross. Right there and then she explained the plan of salvation to him in a way that made simple sense to a 7 year old. Joel finished his story on Sabbath with tears in his eyes and said, “Thanks for that, Mom”. Were it not for the influence of his mom’s gentle and patient answer at such a tender age, who knows whether he would have made the decision to get to know and to follow Jesus.
As parents we have a beautiful opportunity and responsibility to guide our children into the knowledge of Jesus saving love. It is my prayer, that we would embrace each opportunity to share the truth of the Cross with our children. “Parents, seek to draw near to God, that His wisdom may guide and His grace assist you, in a work which will be as enduring for eternity.” Ellen White, CG, p 73

Easter is a time in the year when Christians place a lot of focus on the resurrection of Christ. But is Easter the only time we should be focusing on the good news of the resurrection of Jesus? I think not! No matter how good or how bad our life seems to be, we can find hope in the resurrection of Jesus. Good Friday could be called the darkest day in the history of the world (although we know that Jesus’ death on the cross was actually an amazing gift for us), but two days later, the darkness was filled with light as the Son of God stepped out from the tomb, victorious over Satan, sin, and death! So no matter how dark things may seem at times in your own life, don’t forget that Jesus was raised from the darkness of death. As we put our faith in Him, He will bring His light into our lives as well! Let HIS light shine in your life!
